Back-to-school season is all about getting back into routines. Calendars fill up, schedules become more predictable, and families settle into a new rhythm after summer. While you’re reorganizing everyone’s schedule, it’s also a great time to check in on your cat. Cats can be remarkably good at making everything look just fine, even when important changes are happening. Taking time to evaluate your cat’s nutrition, veterinary care, enrichment, and care team can help you stay ahead of their changing needs. At Park Cities Pet Care, we believe keeping cats Home. Healthy. Happy. starts with understanding what they need, which is why today we’re talking about Dallas cats and back-to-school check-ins.

Take a Fresh Look at Their Food and Hydration

When was the last time you really looked at what ingredients are in your cat’s food?

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they have specific nutritional requirements that must be met through animal-based nutrients. Do your research and talk with your veterinarian about whether your cat’s current food is appropriate for their age, weight, health, and individual nutritional needs.

Hydration deserves attention, too. Cats naturally tend to have a relatively low thirst drive because they originated from desert cats. For this reason, it’s important to have fresh water readily available and discuss your cat’s hydration with your veterinarian. We recommend feeding cats wet food and encourage you to consider investing in a cat water fountain if you haven’t already.

Book That Veterinary Checkup

Speaking of chatting with your vet, if your cat hasn’t visited the veterinarian recently, back-to-school season is a good reminder to make an appointment.

Routine veterinary visits can help identify health changes that may not be obvious at home. Ask your veterinarian to evaluate your cat’s weight and body condition and discuss whether bloodwork is appropriate based on their age and medical history.

Don’t forget dental health. Cats can develop painful dental problems without showing obvious signs, so regular oral examinations are an important part of preventive care.

And as cats enter their senior years, your veterinarian may recommend more frequent exams, specialized products and services, or additional monitoring.

Put Playtime on the Schedule

Cats may spend a lot of time napping, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need activity.

Interactive play and environmental enrichment give cats opportunities to engage in natural behaviors such as stalking, chasing, pouncing, climbing, scratching, and exploring.

Try incorporating short play sessions into your daily routine. Wand toys, food puzzles, scratching surfaces, cat trees, window perches, cat shelves and hammocks, and tunnels can make your cat’s environment more interesting. Rotating toys is also a great way to keep toys interesting because even small changes can add variety to an indoor cat’s day.

Build a Relationship With a Professional Cat Sitter

If you don’t already have a professional cat sitter in Dallas, now is an excellent time to establish that relationship – before you need one!

Waiting until a vacation or emergency to find someone means you’re making an important decision under pressure. Establishing a relationship ahead of time gives your cat sitter an opportunity to learn your cat’s personality, routines, preferences, medications, feeding instructions, and normal behavior.

This can become even more valuable as your cat ages.

Senior cats may develop medical conditions, require medications, need changes to their feeding routine, or simply benefit from closer observation while you’re traveling. Having an experienced professional who already knows your cat can provide valuable continuity of care.

At Park Cities Pet Care, we also recognize that cats are not small dogs. Our caregivers receive training designed to help us provide thoughtful, consistent cat care while respecting each cat’s individual personality and preferences.

Make Your Cat Part of the New Routine

Back-to-school season isn’t only for new notebooks and new schedules. It’s an opportunity to reset routines for the entire household, including the feline members.

Take a look at the food bowl. Buy a cat water fountain. Schedule the veterinary appointment. Add some enrichment to their day. And make sure you have trusted professional care lined up before your next trip.

Your cat may not need a backpack or freshly sharpened pencils, but a little back-to-school planning can help set them up for a healthier, happier year!
